Who Supports the Supporters?

Later this month, our co-founder Jess will be speaking at the FACE and NEON conferences on a question that deserves more attention across education, outreach, coaching, and student support:

Who supports the supporters?

Every day, professionals across schools, colleges, universities, and organisations help others navigate challenges, build confidence, and achieve their goals. They listen, encourage, advocate, and guide. Yet many have limited opportunities to reflect on the impact of this work on themselves.

This is where supervision plays a vital role.

More than a space to offload, supervision offers structured reflection, helping practitioners explore challenges, maintain professional boundaries, develop their practice, and protect their wellbeing. As support roles become increasingly complex, these reflective spaces are more important than ever.

As our co-founder Jess explains:

“We often ask professionals to hold space for others without giving them space for themselves. Supervision creates that space for supporting reflection, wellbeing, and professional growth in roles that are increasingly complex and emotionally demanding.”

Whether working in widening participation, student success, coaching, mentoring, or pastoral support, investing in those who support others is not an optional extra. It is essential to creating sustainable, effective support for the people and communities we serve.

We’re looking forward to continuing this conversation at FACE and NEON and exploring how supervision can help ensure that those who support others are supported too.
