Supporting Students through the January Slump
Being accepted to university is a major achievement, especially for students from under-represented backgrounds. But progression through university is equally important.
Across the UK, around 5–7% of full-time undergraduates don’t continue into their second year – and that figure is higher for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. (Gov.uk)
That means thousands of young people who started their degree, are not continuing – not because they lack talent, but often because they feel isolated, overwhelmed, or disconnected.
Coming back after Christmas can be tough, with dark evenings, essays and exams ramping up, and homesickness and loneliness setting in.
For many first-generation students or those without a strong peer network at university, returning after the comfort of home reinforces a sense of not belonging, and returning can feel even harder.
If you’re a student reading this:
- Connection matters. Find your people, it doesn’t have to be a big crowd.
- Look after yourself. Your wellbeing is a priority, not an add-on.
- Create belonging, even in small ways. Cooking a meal, having a movie night, calling a friend – these small familiar rituals can anchor you. Ask yourself what makes you feel at home, and how you can apply this at university.
- Reflect on your why. Is your goal extrinsic – others’ approval? Or intrinsic – your own growth? Align your journey to you.
- You can reach out, vulnerability isn’t weakness.
Send that message. Schedule a FaceTime with a school friend. Invite someone for tea instead of a night out.
Connection and support can make all the difference.
If you work with students:
✔ Have you checked in with someone who seemed quiet after holidays?
✔ Are your first-year programmes offering space to talk about belonging, not just academic skills?
✔ Can you create moments that connect as well as inform?
Students measure support not just in emails, but in experiences where they feel seen.
Here at Inclusive Futures CIC, in January especially, our coaching sessions can help both students and staff:
✔ unpack transition challenges and reframe goals
✔ build connection and community
✔ identify next steps with purpose
It’s not just about staying at university, it’s about thriving there. If you’d like to learn more about how we can help educators support their students, get in touch – jess@inclusivefutures.co.uk
So, our final message to everyone within the education space:
👉 To students: You belong here.
👉 To educators: Your check-in could change a trajectory.
👉 To all: Let’s redefine success beyond acceptance – to fulfilment, connection and growth.
